Is there anything worse than a bad headache? I’ve had the dubious fortune to compare my own crippling low back pain and the pain of bad pressure headaches, and I think I’d rather be unable to get out of bed than suffer through the headache for one moment longer.

What surprises me is how long people suffer and put up with this situation.

But no, I get it. Of course you want to feel good, free of pounding pain, sensitivity to light, sound, and movement. I’m sure you’ve tried plenty to get there.

It’s just that nothing has worked. And maybe even over time, all the stuff that happens in life gradually builds up and you find yourself trying to get by, until there’s yet another headache or migraine. It’s just one more thing you have to deal with. That is, if they’re not too bad...

But if they are, then the sharp pains, dull aches, strange sensitivities, and of course, trying to figure out what the “triggers” are, so you can avoid ever doing them again... They all add up to make you wonder if you can make it through your day, get a few things done, without paying for it, or if today’s another one lost to the haze, fog, and pain of a headache.

Frustration and anxiety set in as you continue to try, but are left constantly wondering if this is just what your lot in life is going to be. Might there also be a bit of fear that it could mean something worse is looming? How much longer will you be able to do the things you love, or will you resign yourself to your fate?

People rarely talk about where that approach leads. You will still have a body that feels like it is betraying you and you will be trapped in the mentality that you just have to live with it while managing the symptoms as best as possible.

The Approach You Have to Life and Your Body Matters

One of my favorite headache stories was one of my first clients. Jenny had suffered with daily headaches since before she was a teenager, and was then nearly forty at the time. Her headaches were so bad that most days they caused her nausea and even vomiting, for thirty years!

Her father was a chiropractor and of course he had tried to help her, but the headaches persisted. Well, by this point, she wasn’t even trying to address them anymore. She was actually looking for help with her posture and the mobility in her shoulders. She didn’t mention the headaches. Until they started going away, that is. That got her attention!

How did working on her shoulders and neck help the headaches to finally go away? Simple, it improved the environment and working conditions her head was operating within. As the tissues of her shoulders and neck softened and allowed more movement, the joints could move properly, the circulation and fluid flow in her head improved, and there was less pressure and stress throughout.

How about another story?

Vanetta became a client when her life was derailed by an unrelenting, painfully debilitating headache, with dizziness.

Actually, she became a client when four months later, after getting all the tests and trying everything the doctor suggested, nothing had helped, or had made it worse.

As the tightened tissues surrounding the sensation of “an ice pick in the base of her head” were eased, as the clenched, bracing muscles and thickened glued tissues in the rest of her body were softened, Vanetta regained her life bit by bit.

What made the difference? An approach that paid attention not only to the place that was hurting, but also to the contributing factors throughout her whole body. Everything else had focused on “making the pain go away,” typically in a very short-sighted way. Luckily for Vanetta, none of that had worked, else she’d probably still be trying to fend off the headaches with temporary “fixes.”

MFR was one of the best things I've chosen to do for myself.


I was feeling limited in what my body was capable of doing when I was going to dance class.

My posture, especially in dance, I would see this “C” curve. I was out of ideas for what to do by myself… my dance instructor told me I should try myofascial release. It has made a huge difference. And, oh yeah, I used to have headaches every single day! I would get nauseated and was throwing up almost every single morning, just feeling yucky all the time.


That doesn't happen anymore. That used to be my regular, every day. I was missing out on all of it, because I was so tired, because I just didn't feel good, I didn’t get to do as many of the things with my family or with my friends that I would want to do.


I grew up with chiropractic, and that was good, but for me, myofascial release is cumulative – each treatment builds upon the last.


I hadn't tried really very much, honestly. I didn't do much self care, I just kind of thought this is my body, this is what it does, this is just sort of what I'm stuck with – and that's not true. I've learned that big time, it's not true. There's so much more that can be done.

Kristal (20s) was already trapped when she found us, her back tightening in pain. She’d been seeing chiropractors and physical therapists since 12 and 15 years of age with only a little bit of temporary relief. She’d given up on being athletic and could hardly be all that active even. Now she was sitting at a desk, trying to be productive but getting even more hunched as her head and back ached.

I remember she couldn’t even begin to arch her spine backwards her spine and ribs were so rigid. She had no clue how that was supposed to work in her body and couldn’t feel the movement at all. (There wasn’t any…)

She was pretty excited coming in one day to show how something had shifted, almost unlocked, and she could get her back arching a little bit.

Kristal has been in less and less back pain, with greatly reduced headaches. She also had a bit of a scare over a cyst putting lots of pressure into her abdomen – these things can be pretty dangerous. Once she felt it reduce and shrink as we treated the area, however, she had no more concern. She was right – medical tests showed we’d helped the cyst to completely disappear.
