Level Up Your Myofascial Self Treatment

If you play video games, you likely know the significance and sense of accomplishment when you “level up.”

Leveling up doesn’t just happen in video games, though. It happens here frequently as clients work with the Release Works Myofascial Therapy team and begin to develop an effective myofascial self treatment practice.

Let me tell you a bit about how that happens as clients begin to shift their relationship and experience with their body.

What does a typical progression look like?

  • We see clients for a number of treatment sessions
  • We recommend an at home myofascial self treatment program customized to the client
  • And when it is time, we start to retrain movement in a more supported and aligned way

It is the middle part that I want to speak to. Self treatment. An at home self care program that will improve the health of your myofascial system for the rest of your life. It isn’t sexy. And it often isn’t fast. It is actually a shift in how you care for your body. But like the tortoise and the hare, consistency, and a slow and steady approach reaps big rewards in terms of change and feeling good.

Myofascial self treatment often starts with us giving you 2-3 basic things you can start to do at home. People frequently want more. More is generally considered to be better.

We aren’t going to give you more.

Why?

Because consistency and initial experience with self treatment is an essential part of becoming effective. First you have to build the habit and the practice of slowing down, arranging or removing whatever you need to in order to make time for yourself, and clearing the space in your life to breathe, soften, and feel for 15-30 minutes a day.

How to develop an effective myofascial self treatment practice

We most likely are going to ask you to sit or lie on a 4” inflatable ball. Like I said, not sexy.

But we need you to do it. Whatever we recommend. In a consistent, daily manner.

As more than one client has shared, “You kept telling me to sit on a ball. It didn’t feel like it was doing anything, but I kept sitting on a ball.” The clients who do this are glad they did. Change happens over time, and while you may feel you are just sitting or lying on a ball and it isn’t doing anything – keep sitting or lying on a ball. It will make a difference.

**Note** It is important how you do this. Sinking and softening and allowing the body to settle and melt over the ball is key. Some people can do this easily, others have to focus their attention a bit more diligently. You may feel like you are just sitting or lying on a ball. If you are doing it in a way that you are sinking and softening, keep doing it. If not, change how you are doing it, and keep doing it.

Learn to engage with your body differently

As you develop a consistent, daily track record of self treatment, what often happens next is kind of fun. This is the leveling up part. People start to get curious about what else they might be able to self treat with the ball. They start to notice things happening in other areas of the body and wonder how they might be able to use the ball to help tight or restricted myofascial tissues there.

In short, they start to engage with the body in an explorative way. And we feel a great deal of pride in being able to tell them, “You just leveled up in your self treatment! Awesome job!” Clients at this point are no longer following a checklist of self treatment suggestions, but have the experience to confidently use a ball (or other self treatment tools or stretching) to effectively address tight and troubled areas of the body.

And that is just the beginning. Next stages of progression involve becoming more intuitive, less focused on things that might be troubled and more curious about what most needs help. Hint: this is often not directly related to the place that is hurting.

Intuitive myofascial self treatment is the gold standard of self care

Engaging with your body in an intuitive and instinctive way is when progress really starts to take off. It is when you can start to wonder with a curious sense of awe, how good might this really get?

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t always self treat in this way. But I absolutely know how to tap into an intuitive engagement with my body when I need it. This is what we are aiming for.

When you can self treat in this way, you will no longer be in crisis. Like many of our clients, you may find that you really don’t have trouble with things anymore, but you like occasional help.

Wherever you are in your experience and sense of effectiveness with your at-home self treatment program, please be consistent. Like brushing your teeth or eating lunch, it is not something you do once and are done.

Consistent, effective myofascial self treatment is the key to maintaining the changes you feel in your sessions here and taking good care of your body for life.

She was introduced to myofascial release as a client struggling with debilitating headaches, dizziness, pain, and muscle tension. Traditional medicine did little to provide relief, and it wasn't until she began seeing a mfr therapist that she started seeing change. She knows first hand how it feels to be trapped in pain with little hope for recovery. Or to be given a diagnostic label like fibromyalgia with little recourse other than dependence on prescription medications. She no longer believes those are the only options available to those struggling with pain or loss of mobility, and credits mfr with helping her get her life back. She considers it a privilege to assist others in their journey. Vanetta's formal education includes an undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University and a Master's degree in Health Promotion from Mississippi State University. She is also a licensed massage therapist and has trained extensively in the John Barnes' Myofascial Release approach. Vanetta loves to travel and explore other places. She now enjoys that active lifestyle she once thought was no longer possible, and can frequently be found outside enjoying the sunshine and hiking the trails of Utah, Idaho, and Arizona.
